PLAQUE (Top Withens, Yorkshire)

   <<Top Withens.   This farmhouse has been associated with "Wuthering Heights",  the Earnshaw home in Emily Bronte's novel.   The buildings,  even when complete,  bore no resemblance to the house she described,  but the situation may have been in her mind when she wrote of the moorland setting of the heights.   Bronte Society 1964.   This plaque has been placed here in response to many inquiries.>>

   Contrary to what is stated on the plaque,  many details coincide (also refer to the following image).   Surely the surroundings described in the novel are wider than they appear in reality,  but what Emily Bronte outlines is closer to an Alpine hut than to a luxury hall:

   <<The apartment and furniture would have been nothing extraordinary as belonging to a homely,  northern farmer with a stubborn countenance,  and stalwart limbs set out to advantage in knee-breeches and gaiters.>>

   <<With this intention I asked Mrs Dean why Heathcliff let Thrushcross Grange,  and preferred living in a situation and residence so much inferior.>>

   <<Top Withens.   Questa casa colonica e' stata associata a "Cime Tempestose",  la dimora degli Earnshaw nel racconto di Emily Bronte.   La costruzione,  anche quando completa,  non assomigliava alla casa da lei descritta,  ma la collocazione potrebbe essere stata nella sua mente quando scrisse delle Cime ambientate nella brughiera.   Bronte Society 1964.   Questa lapide e' stata qui posta in risposta a molte domande.>>

   Nonostante quanto affermato nella lapide,  molti dettagli coincidono (si veda al proposito anche l'immagine seguente).   Certamente gli ambienti descritti nel romanzo sono piu' vasti e decorati di come non appaiano nella realta',  ma cio' che Emily Bronte tratteggia e' molto piu' simile ad una baita di montagna che ad una villa signorile:

   <<La stanza e l'arredamento non sarebbero stati in alcun modo singolari se fossero appartenuti a un semplice fattore del nord,  dal viso ostinato e le gambe robuste sottolineate dai calzoni al ginocchio e gli stivali.>>

   <<Chiesi dunque alla signora Dean perche' Heathcliff affittasse Thrushcross Grange e preferisse vivere in una casa e in un ambiente di tanto inferiori.>>
