A DALE (Haworth Moor, Yorkshire)

   In spite of its wild and unpolluted appearance,  the moor is,  in reality,  an unintentional creation of Man.   As a matter of fact, it reveals the presence of a preexisting forest which no longer exists due to the degradation of the soil.   Ancient English populations would fell the forest to create pastures for sheep;   the soil,  then deprived of its protection,  would be washed away by persistent rains until it became sterile.
   The only plant that can survive on these strongly reactive acidic grounds is the heather,  thanks to its mycorritian symbiosis between its roots and a fungus able to recycle its nutrients.   As a consequence,  the ground takes on an impressive black coal color.

   Nonostante il suo aspetto selvaggio ed incontaminato,  la brughiera e' in realta' opera involontaria dell'uomo.   Essa indica difatti la presenza di una foresta preesistente che non sussiste per degradazione del suolo.   Nella fattispecie inglese,  le foreste vennero abbattute da antiche popolazioni per creare nuovi pascoli per le greggi;   la terra,  rimasta priva di protezione,  venne dilavata dalle continue piogge inglesi fino a divenire sterile.
   L'unica pianta a poter sopravvivere in questi terreni a reazione fortemente acida e' l'erica,  grazie alla simbiosi micorrizia tra le sue radici ed un fungo in grado di rimettere in circolo le poche sostanze nutritive.   Come conseguenza,  il terreno assume il suo spettacolare colore nero torboso.
